Trade unions in the Spanish State call for release of Öcalan and recognition of Kurdish people

Several trade unions in the Spanish State, Basque Country, Galizia, Catalonia, Asturias, Canarias have issued a joint call for the release of Abdullah Öcalan and the recognition of the Kurdish people.

The call said: “On 15 February, 27 years will have passed since the imprisonment of Abdullah Öcalan, who symbolizes the struggle for justice, freedom, and the rights of peoples. From various trade unions, we wish to join our voices to demand his immediate release, recognizing that his freedom is urgent and essential in order to move toward peace and stability in the Middle East.

Today, more than ever, it is essential to put pressure on Turkey so that the opportunity to advance toward peace is not lost, by guaranteeing Öcalan’s release and respecting the rights of the Kurdish people. Our solidarity is a clear call for justice and for the recognition of diversity as the foundation of democratic and plural coexistence.”

The call added: “The paradigm created by Öcalan proposes a system based on women’s liberation, the coexistence of diversity, and the construction of plural societies, as has been developed in Rojava. This model can serve as an example for all, demonstrating that justice, democracy, and cooperation among peoples are possible.

The decades-long resistance of the Kurds has shown that the international community must recognize a legitimate political and social status for the Kurdish people, respecting their rights and aspirations.”

The call continued: “From our trade unions, we reaffirm our commitment to solidarity and justice, and we call on all organizations and governments around the world to support the release of Öcalan and the recognition of the rights of the Kurdish people.”

The signatories of the call are:
