The following was first published by Mezopotamya News Agency, based off of discussions with the Imrali Delegation of the People’s Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), alongside Mithat Sancar, Pervin Buldan, and Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan, who stated that Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan played a significant role in securing the agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and al Jolani’s Syrian Transitional Government.

What message did Abdullah Öcalan send to whom prior to the SDF-Damascus agreement?

It has been revealed that Abdullah Öcalan stepped in during the critical days when clashes intensified in Rojava. He conveyed important messages and warnings to the SDF, the state, and South Kurdish politicians.

On January 30, the SDF made public the agreement they had reached with the Syrian Interim Government. Following the agreement, a ceasefire was established and ground traffic increased. Delegations affiliated with Damascus arrived in Kobanê, Hesekê, and Qamişlo. The QSD appointed Nureddîn Îsa Ahmed as governor of Hesekê. Integration efforts are ongoing.

What warnings did Abdullah Öcalan issue?

We spoke with political sources familiar with the communication process on Imrali Island regarding this issue. While the information provided by DEM Party members was confirmed, we learned that Abdullah Öcalan made intensive efforts throughout the process.

According to the obtained information, Abdullah Öcalan conveyed messages to the SDF, Kurdish political actors in the Federal Kurdistan Region in Iraq, the DEM Party, and state officials during the period of conflict.

Abdullah Öcalan warned that continued attacks on Aleppo could lead to an extremely bloody situation if the problem is not resolved. He stated that the situation has dangerous dynamics that could turn the coming century into a conflict between Kurds, Turks, and Arabs.

Abdullah Öcalan told the SDF that the current situation could only be resolved through negotiation and dialogue. He also conveyed that if the Syrian administration embraced democracy, acknowledged the Kurdish presence, and recognized the Kurds’ right to political representation, the SDF could enter into a democratic negotiation process.

Öcalan’s Message to Kurdish Political Parties

It was noted that Abdullah Öcalan conveyed messages to not only the SDF, but also to Kurdish political forces, including the KCK, politicians in the Kurdistan Region, and the DEM Party. The messages reportedly warned of an extremely great danger and therefore called for Rojava to be owned on the basis of democratic unity.

Öcalan’s Message to the Turkish state: “Do not be part of the plan”

During this process, Abdullah Öcalan also warned the state and the government. According to sources, he sent them a message saying, “Do not be part of the plan that aims to eliminate the Kurds.” He warned that participating in the attacks would lead to major fractures, as well as serious and negative consequences. He urged the state/government to “play a positive role.”

The agreement was realized through the will of Abdullah Öcalan

The agreement announced on January 30 was implemented with Abdullah Öcalan’s full support and cooperation. It was also learned that KDP President Mesud Barzani and PUK President Bafil Talabani played an important role in the process. Both leaders encouraged the parties to uphold the agreement.
