Global Action Day Recap

In the context of the “Freedom for Öcalan – Political Solution for the Kurdish Question” campaign, which began on 10 October 2023, global actions were initiated for the physical liberation of Abdullah Öcalan. The campaign is a joint effort by Internationalist Friends and organisations that have worked alongside the organised Kurdish society for many years. Through rallies, protests, sit-ins, letters, marches, hunger strikes, book days, concerts, information tents and art shows, they have intensified the pressure on the Turkish state and international institutions. Letters have been sent to the CPT, CoE and UN. They have also garnered the support of 69 Nobel laureates, who have done the same.

This last years, numerous events have been held in over 50 countries around the world under the umbrella of global calls, such as Öcalan Book Days, Dialogues with Öcalan, and International Action Days. These events sent a clear message to the Turkish state and its allies that people around the world will continue to struggle for the physical freedom of Abdullah Öcalan.

In answering the historical call for peace and a democratic society from Reber Apo, and demonstrating their active support for the ongoing process, on 30 June 2025, from Latin America to Europe, in different cities, the continuation of the campaign took shape with mural actions, demonstrations, actions against turkish embassy, reading circles, or standing banners in different places.

Internationalists took action in Colombia, Sweden, Finland, Catalonia, France, and Slovenia. Solidarity videos have arrived from internationalist friends from different places. More actions in support of the call for peace and democracy, and for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan are expected in the coming days. Kurdish youth and community members have also organized various events, ranging from demonstrations to reading circles, in European cities.

International Mural Action: From Colombia to Sweden, different artist groups created large murals advocating for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan. Both murals start with “Freedom for Öcalan” and feature his face alongside the phrase “Don’t look for us in the mountains because we are everywhere.”

In Països Catalans (Central Catalunya, Lleida, and Valencia), friends from Ponent amb Kurdistan (Lleida), La Saó (a democratic confederalist national organization), and Legerín Azadi (Valencia) took part in various activities, including unfurling banners atop Catalan mountains and renaming a street in Lleida “Abdullah Öcalan Street.” Around 30 people gathered in Valencia to discuss and show solidarity, calling for Abdullah Öcalan’s liberation.

Abya Yala, European and Kurdish internationalist women sent a message for the liberation of Abdullah Öcalan, ending with the slogan of the campaign “Freedom for Öcalan, Political Solution for Kurdistan” in spanish, Italian, Greek, French, Kurdish and English.

In Oulo, Finland, the local friends put up posters around the city with “Free Öcalan” in the walls and posters with the face of Serokati.

In Ljubliana, Slovenia, the Antiauthoritarian movement there hanged in the Turkish embassy a banner with “Free Öcalan – For peace, democratic and confederalist future of Middle East and beyond”. They threw pamphlets in support of the Peace and Democracy process. This action was posted on the X account @Ainfoshop, which demanded the liberation of Abdullah Öcalan.
